Transfer from Sun City to Pilanesberg.

Arrival at Pilanesberg Game Reserve. The reserve lies in the crater of an extinct volcano, one of the greatest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world with rare rock types and formations that make it a unique and primary geological feature. Pilanesberg is home to most African wildlife species and includes a walk-in aviary that shelters over 80 species of indigenous birds. The reserve itself is home to 360 different types of birds and over 7 000 animals. Its scenic terrain of rocky outcrops, open grasslands, wooded valleys and thickets is situated in the ecologically rich transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wet Lowveld, resulting in a wide variety of flora and fauna not often found side by side. For an extra-special safari experience, Pilansberg offers hot air balloon rides over the ancient landscape, and elephant back safaris and interaction. The park, in the North West Province of South Africa, is just a two-hour drive from Johannesburg. (Activities included in your package as per program below.)

Afternoon 4×4 game drive in the Pilanesberg National Park. This diverse park covers 55 000 hectares of arresting African landscape ranging from rocky ravines and rolling hills to wetlands and lakes, all of which support an amazing assortment of animals and birds. Look out for hippos wallowing in the dam while listening to the harmonious call of the African fish eagle as it swoops across the water in search of fish. The park is home to the Big Five as well as giraffe, cerval, wild dog and eland, to name but a few. Your afternoon safari will take you on an exciting journey through the complex of ringed hills in the reserve in search of wildlife and birds. Here you will also find numerous ancient Iron and Stone Age sites that indicate signs of the early presence of man.

It is also a fantastic bird watching destination with over 350 recorded species including the crimson-breasted shrike, pied babbler and violet-eared waxbill. Its landscape supports a combination of habitats from open grasslands and hilly slopes to wooded gorges and rocky outcrops, and game viewing is easy and rewarding with many animal encounters and sightings. Watch rhinos and lions battling for supremacy at the watering hole and perhaps even catch a glimpse of the elusive sable antelope.
